Taiwanese teen threatening school in U.S. had handmade gun, ammo
Thornton, Pennsylvania, April 2 (CNA) A Taiwanese student who was arrested in the United States last week for threatening to shoot up his school had built a 9mm handgun with parts bought online and had over 1,600 rounds of ammunition for various firearms, U.S. media reported Monday.

An Tso Sun (孫安佐), 18, had approximately 225 rounds of 12-gauge ammo, 663 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 295 rounds of AR-15 ammunition, and 425 rounds of AK-47 ammo, cbsphilly.com said, citing Michael Chitwood, superintendent of the Upper Darby police in Pennsylvania.
Upper Darby police had previously revealed that Sun's school-issued iPad showed searches on how to buy an AK-47 or an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
The student at Monsignor Bonner Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School allegedly was planning an attack on May 1. He was arrested and detained on March 27 on charges of making terrorist threats.
The Archdiocese confirmed to CBS3 that Sun has since been expelled, the report said.
"In my opinion, based on the totality of everything, we certainly feel he was going to shoot down the school," Chitwood was quoted as saying in a news conference Monday.
The teenager's parents, actor Sun Peng (孫鵬) and opera singer Di Ying (狄鶯), have maintained that he was joking when he talked about shooting up his school.
The couple, who arrived in the United States on March 30, visited their son at Delaware County Prison on Monday morning accompanied by lawyer Robert Keller, whom they have retained to represent their son.
Keller later told the media that the parents were very emotional and cried during what he described as a "heartwarming" meeting.
Sun Peng and Di Ying love their son very much and will do their utmost to protect him and ensure that he obtains the best defense possible, according to Keller.
A hearing on the case is scheduled for April 11, he said, adding that it is still premature to discuss how the case will develop.

'Lone Wolf?': Department of Homeland Security Investigating Taiwanese Exchange Student

He quietly built an arsenal in Delaware County. Now, the Department of Homeland Security is helping local officials unravel what led a Taiwanese exchange student to allegedly make terroristic threats against his host high school.
On Tuesday, Upper Darby police turned over a computer, iPad and smartphone belonging to An Tso Sun to Homeland Security for analysis, Upper Darby Police Department Superintendent Michael Chitwood told NBC10.
The federal agency will determine whether Sun’s threats to carry out a shooting at Bonner and Prendergast Catholic High School in Drexel Hill expand beyond local boundaries.
“Is this a lone wolf or is he associated with somebody else?” Chitwood asked. “We’ll have a better idea when we get everything in place.”
Taiwan Student in Alleged School Plot Had 'Unusual Ideas'
Sun remains jailed after being charged last week with making terroristic threats. His parents traveled to the U.S. from Taiwan over the weekend, but declined an interview with NBC10.

Their 18-year-old son has only been in the U.S. for five months, according to police. He threatened to commit a shooting on May 1 at the high school he attended, according to Upper Darby police. Sun later claimed to have been joking.
But investigators this week discovered 1,600 rounds of ammunition for a variety of firearms, including assault rifles and handguns. The ammo and gun parts were bought over the internet since Sun arrived to the United States in August, Chitwood said. He went online on a school-issued iPad at least 20 times to search about guns or to buy ammo and gun parts.
Police Find Handmade Gun & 1,600 Rounds in HS Threat Case
During a search of Sun's bedroom on Tuesday, police recovered other items including a military-style ballistic vest, military-style web gear with pouches to hold ammo clips, a crossbow with scope and seven arrows, a loading dock for rifle clips, 9-mm ammunition and a strangling device, police said.

During the course of the investigation, Chitwood said police found the duffel bag.
Sun, who is in the U.S. on a student visa, legally obtained all of the weaponry, Chitwood said. His mother is a famous opera singer in Taiwan and his father is an actor.
"People in Taiwan are just as shocked as they are here," John Zang, a CTI-TV reporter, said. "His parents are like Brad and Angelina."
Sun's tutor described him as a "kind" teen who "really cared about things."

Police: Exchange Student Accused Of School Shooting Plot Built Gun, Had Over 1,600 Rounds Of Ammunition

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) — Upper Darby police say a foreign exchange student who was arrested last week for threatening to shoot up his school had built a gun with over 1,600 rounds of ammunition.
Police say 18-year-old An Tso Sun of Taiwan, a foreign exchange student at Monsignor Bonner Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School, had hundreds of rounds for an AR-15 and AK-47 and a 9 mm handgun he built himself from parts purchased online. The parts are virtually untraceable. He was allegedly planning to unleash carnage on the school May 1.
Court records show Sun told a classmate about the possible attack, who in turn blew the lid off the plan once he alerted a school employee.
Former Tutor: Foreign Exchange Student Charged In Delaware County School Threat Had ‘Unusual Ideas’
According to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood, Sun had approximately 225 rounds of 12-gauge ammo, 663 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 295 rounds of AR-15 ammunition, and 425 rounds of AK-47 ammo, along with other sorts of ammunition.
Another troubling revelation released during Monday’s news conference was that once detectives informed Sun’s host parent that he was under investigation, the bag which had been in a bedroom at an East Lansdowne residence was moved in an attempt to hide it.

Police declined to identify the host parent and there is no word if charges are pending for that person.
The woman, whose identity we’re withholding, wasn’t home when CBS3  came knocking. A woman at her law firm took a message for us.
“In my opinion, based on the totality of everything, we certainly feel he was going to shoot down the school,” said Chitwood.
Chitwood says they are still conducting their investigation and if there were other people involved.
The Archdiocese confirms to CBS3 Sun has since been expelled.
Counselors will be available to students on Tuesday.
Robert C. Keller and Michael N. Kotik are representing An-Tso Sun in this Delaware County criminal case.
They released this statement to CBS3:
“Our client just turned 18 in January and is a senior in high school. This young man has had no prior contacts with the courts and has been considered an affable, precocious student with no discipline or antisocial tendencies. The young man’s parents have flown in from Taiwan and fully support their child. Our investigation reveals that there was no intention to terrorize or otherwise commit any criminal act. The family is concerned by the rising level of rhetoric that is being transmitted to the news media and hopes that the public will keep an open mind as all the facts and circumstances are brought forward.”

Over 1,600 rounds of ammunition and a semiautomatic firearm were found after a student was arrested for threatening to shoot up a Pennsylvania school, officials said Monday.
An Tso Sun, an exchange student from Taiwan, was arrested last week and charged with terrorist threats with the intent to terrorize another, according to Upper Darby Police.
Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said Sun bought the parts for the firearm online and “put it together” himself.
“It was a weapon capable of firing,” Chitwood said.
Among the recovered ammunition were 225 rounds of 12-gauge shotgun ammunition; 663 rounds of 9mm ammunition; 295 rounds of AR-15 ammunition; and 425 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, according to Chitwood.
On the day of his arrest, Sun’s host mother, who has not yet been identified, allegedly packed up the ammunition and the weapon, and gave them to another person, Chitwood said.
“She went back to the house and loads all the ammo and the gun into a black bag. She then takes that to another person at another location,” Chitwood said, “She didn’t give it to the police.”
Investigators recovered the objects last Thursday after receiving a tip. Chitwood did not say where they found them.
The host mother has not been charged.
Last week, Sun was arrested after he told a fellow student at Bonner Prendergast Catholic High School to “not come to school on May 1” because he “was going to shoot up the school," according to Chitwood. That student told school officials, and police were notified.
Sun allegedly told the student he was “kidding.”
Prior to uncovering the ammunition and firearm, officials found a number of items in Sun’s bedroom including: a military-style ballistic vest; a high-powered crossbow with scope and light; arrows; 29 rounds of 9mm ammunition; a strangling device; a "military" ski mask; and ear protectors for firing.
“When you add it all together, it’s a major concern,” Chitwood said.
Sun is currently in custody and police are still investigating the incident.
